That's the official name for a people who live predominantly in the province Machairan-Dyl of the realm Borgon-Dyl. They are also often called Taraner. Their appearance is not unlike that of the pure-blood Borgon-Dun, the children of Borgon, though they do not have the purple-violet eyes of the latter. Some consider them a mixed breed of Borgon-Dun and the fair-skinned neighbors from Ataris. Since Machairan-Dyl consists, to a large part, of a peninsula enclosing the Gulf of Myrna on the Machairas side (hence the name of the province), and the rest is made up by the Highlands of Sheroanide (where a great Temple of Borgon is located), the Barano population is almost equally divided into worshipers of Norytton, God of the Sea, and Borgon, God of War and Earth-bound Strength.
